Human Hair Necklaces

images from fashionista.com

British art student Kerry Howell's graduate project was a series of five necklaces made from human hair. Called "Attraction/Aversion", the collection explores "how people can feel these seemingly opposing emotional responses simultaneously." She wanted people to be attracted to the pieces from a distance, thinking they look beautiful and intricate, but when they realize what the necklaces are made of, their reaction immediately changes to that of repulse and disgust.

Taking between 40-60 hours to make, the necklaces are made out of the artist's own hair and also hair from a friend's mother. This project has won her an award from the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture.

Fahionista.com interviewed the artist about her project, which can be viewed HERE.

Would you wear a necklace made out of human hair? x

Fashion icon Iris Apfel, at age 88 has announced the launch of her first jewellery collection with HSN (Home Style Network). "Rara Avis" by Iris Apfel will go on sale via HSN in September, and consists of 13 pieces with prices ranging from $20- $180.

'I have amassed an enormous collection of bags, belts, bangles and beads without which I would be lost.

One can change the entire look of an outfit by substituting one accessory for another. I love objects from different worlds, different eras, combined my way. Never uptight, achieving - hopefully - a kind of throwaway chic.' (dailymail.co.uk)

Above are some of the pieces from her latest collection, though the toucan pin (first image) after much controversy has been removed from the collection. You can read about them here:

Coming up next might be a collaboration with jewellery designer Alexis Bittar. In an interview with Refinery29, the designer revealed that part of his fashion week's plans was "doing a collaboratoin with Iris Apfel". Definitely looking forward to seeing what a CFDA's "Accessory Designer of the Year" (for 2010) and a fashion icon are coming up with! x
