Daphne Guinness has collaborated with friend jewellery designer Shaun Leane to create a one-of-a-kind 18-carat hand crafted, diamond encrusted, armour glove. Guinness originally asked her friend Leane (who created the theatrical jewels for Alexander McQueen runway shows) to make a piece of body armour for her, and the commission evolved into a collaboration which took five years to complete, and five people including Shaun to work on it.
To showcase the elaborate glove, Guinness posed as an elegant and otherworldly corpse- dressed in a whisper-thin, one piece Alexander McQueen bodysuit, she lay silently on a mirrored bed with a veil over her body. Just one arm exposed, encased in her bejewelled glove.
A mold was made of her arm for the glove, and according to Guinness "The detail in its design is hugely symbolic. The birds with which it is embellished denote freedom from the material world. The gold from which it is molded was thought to have magical powers. Like the knights of my childhood daydreams, this beautiful glove is resilient and beautiful, strong despite its finery."
On the presentation of her glove, "I always harbored a desire to attend a party and remain unseen by all attending it, like a fly on the wall. Last night, I was seen, but not heard. Nanny would've been awfully proud. I was lying down, removed from all the gossip around me, silenced and still- evocative of a knight lying in state. At least I had my armor."
The piece is for sale for 1.1 million pounds.
